Double Birthday Day

Today is a pretty big day for Team Awesome. Not one, but two family members are celebrating birthdays, and for the first time in a while, we can???t be there. In fact, we aren???t going to be able to go to Bastrop for quite a while. So, as a poor excuse for a birthday wish I???m writing a blog about the birthday boy and girl.

??

Papaw - While Nana and Papaw disagree about how old he is today (some confusion over whether the birth certificate was filed correctly or not. Can you believe that used to be a problem?), everyone agrees that this is his special day.

??

Papaw was my best buddy as a kid. During kindegarten, he???d pick me up almost every day after school, fix me lunch and then hang out watching afternoon cartoons with me on Nickelodeon. Like my dad, he tried to interest me in the outdoors (his love is fishing while Dad???s is hunting) and almost succeeded, if only I hadn???t had to touch this icky fish. He also (much to the chagrin of my mother and Nana) taught me a love for slightly dirty limericks and songs. Songs that begin with ???I don???t know but I been told,??? or ???Monkey and the baboon playing in the grass.??? I???ll let the reader imagine how those songs end.

??

He???s the best buddy that a little boy could have, and one of my main regrets that we don???t live closer to them now, is that Judah won???t be able to spend as much time with him as I did. I love you Papaw, Happy Birthday.

??

Angie - While there is little disagreement in the family about how old Angie is (modern medical records FTW), I myself am a little confused. When we were kids, it seemed that she was 8 or 9 years older than me, but she only looks a year or two older now (wink, wink. Your welcome, sis), so I???m not sure.

??

Angie was a great big sister. She was quite cool (as any teenager would be to an 8 year old), played awesome music that I was pretty sure my parents would not approve of (thanks for the rap mixtape, sis), and would even take me riding around sometimes on weekends with her friends. Having been a teenager myself later on, I cannot imagine why she did this, since I wouldn???t have been caught dead with a little kid on a Friday or Saturday night. But she did, and I am eternally grateful.

??

She also has given me two awesome nephews and one beautiful niece. I don???t see any of them as often as I???d like, but I love them all, and thank Angie that she added them to the family. Other than a brief period where she was fond of chasing me with pickles (I fear the dill, what can I say?) she???s been an excellent sister, and I hope today is a great birthday.

??

Ella and I (and Judah) really enjoy living in New Orleans. Our friends, Richard and Allie have just moved back (can you believe I haven???t written about that yet?) and we think this year may be even better than last. But on day???s like today, when I know the whole family will be getting together to celebrate Papaw and Angie???s birthdays, I???m a little sad to be so far away.

??

Happy birthday you two, and many many more.
